What is the Spravato Esketamine
Spravato® is a medication primarily used for treatment resistant depression. It is inhaled through the nose using a device similar to nasal sprays such as saline and Flonase. Spravato® may also be used for acute suicidal ideation. Spravato® must be administered at a certified facility with a licensed healthcare professional on site.
Spravato® is not for everyone. Patients must have a formal diagnosis of major depressive disorder, which is not is remission despite the use of at least 2 medications for depression. Treatment for depression, including at least one medication, must continue during the course of treatment with Spravato®. Certain medications may not be used in conjunction with Spravato®. Patients must be evaluated by our mental health professional(s) to see if Spravato® is right for you.
Important points to consider before your consultation:
- Treatment sessions are a minimum of 120 minutes (2 hours) each
- Patients must remain on site for the duration of treatment
- Patients cannot drive to or from treatment, nor for the remainder of the day following treatment
- Time commitment for treatment
- Weeks 1-4: twice weekly, 48 hours apart
- Weeks 5-9: once weekly
- After week 9: once weekly or once every other week
- Depending upon the recommendation from your healthcare provider
- Treatment may persist for as long as needed
- Uncontrolled blood pressure may exclude patients from Spravato®
